TWU School of Nursing welcomes new faculty

The TWU School of Nursing is pleased to introduce and welcome new colleagues.

Dr. Mi-Yeon Kim, BSN (University of Manitoba), MSN (McGill 1998), PhD (UBC 2013)

Assistant Professor

Dr. Kim has a depth of experience in clinical practice and nursing education, having held roles as nurse educator, education coordinator, and clinical nurse specialist. She has taught in coronary care, medical and surgical ICUs, and acute medical/surgical wards. She comes to TWU from Langara College where she taught in the BSN program. She also taught for 5 years at the University of Calgary in Qatar in graduate and undergraduate programs. Her research program is in cardiovascular nursing. Her dissertation addressed the relationship between types of social support, coping strategies, and psychological distress in individuals living with congenital heart disease. Dr. Kim is bringing her considerable expertise to the 4th year Complex Care course, and the graduate course in knowledge translation.

Dr. Kendra Rieger, BSN (University of Manitoba), PhD (University of Manitoba, 2017)

Assistant Professor

Dr. Rieger brings teaching expertise and a program of research in arts-based approaches in health care and higher education. Dr. Rieger has been a nurse educator for 14 years, and prior to that a clinical practice as a perinatal nurse in Winnipeg. Her award-winning scholarship is innovative in employing collaborative, arts-based methodologies such as storytelling and photo- and art-elicitation with the goals of furthering psychosocial care, meaningful learning, and health equity. As an example, Kendra is leading a CIHR-funded patient-engaged scoping review on storytelling approaches within Indigenous health research. The project brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers with Indigenous elders, patients, and healthcare providers. Dr. Rieger will be teaching 4th year undergraduate students in nursing leadership in January, and is co-leadng the MSN course in knowledge translation.

Dr. Kim and Dr. Rieger are joining TWU during a most unusual pandemic time. The TWU School of Nursing is grateful for their contributions to the team, and wish them much success, gratification, and joy in their work.
