AEDs & Naloxone Kits
TWU is committed to the health and safety of our campus community. AEDs and Naloxone kits are available across campus to support rapid response during medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest and opioid overdose.
IN AN EMERGENCY:
Call 911 immediately. Provide your location, building name, and number.
Contact Campus Security – ext. 2099 or 604-513-2099. They can direct emergency crews to your location quickly and provide emergency first aid.
Send someone to retrieve the nearest AED or naloxone kit.
Stay with the person until emergency services arrive.
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
What is it?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device used to help someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, a condition where the heart unexpectedly stops beating. AEDs are safe and designed for use by anyone, even without prior training. The device provides automated guidance and voice prompts.
When do I use it?
Use an AED if a person is unresponsive, not breathing normally, and has no pulse.
Using an AED
While training is not required, CPR/AED training is encouraged.
After calling 911 and security, push hard and fast in the centre of the chest (at least 5 cm deep, 100–120x/min), power on the AED, follow the voice prompts and continue until medical help arrives.
13 AEDs are located throughout campus (Langley and Richmond):
- Security – Campus Safety and Parking
- Reimer Student Centre – main lobby (by elevator door)
- Neufeld Science Centre – south entrance (on west wall, main floor)
- Stanley Nelson Centre – main lobby (north)
- Douglas Centre – Wellness Centre
- David E. Enarson Gymnasium – two portable AEDs (clinic use – at LEC and with trainers)
- David E. Enarson Gymnasium – main (straight through lobby, right of gymnasium entrance)

Naloxone Kits (Overdose Response)
What is naloxone?
Naloxone is a medication that can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is safe and easy to use, non-addictive and harmless if opioids are not present.
Naloxone does not replace emergency medical care.
When do I administer naloxone?
Use naloxone if someone:
- is unresponsive or unconscious
- is breathing very slowly or not at all
