Dr. Paul Chamberlain publishes new book exploring the changing landscape of atheism

TWU professor’s latest work gives insight into the current framing of atheism and helps Christians confidently navigate challenging conversations with thoughtful responses

Trinity Western University professor Dr. Paul Chamberlain has published a new book that examines how atheism is being defined, discussed, and advanced in contemporary culture, offering readers a guide to understanding and engaging thoughtfully with these evolving conversations.

Published by Cascade Publishers, The Changing World of Atheism: Coming to Grips with Recent Atheist Strategies and Signs Pointing to God draws on years of research, teaching, public speaking, and academic reflection. Professor of culture and Christianity, leadership, ethics, philosophy of religion, and apologetics, Dr. Chamberlain is widely recognized for his contributions to Christian philosophy, ethics, and apologetics.

The book explores shifts in contemporary atheist thought and the ways these ideas are communicated through social media, popular literature, and public debate. Dr. Chamberlain examines how these developments have influenced discussions about belief and unbelief and equips readers to engage those conversations with greater clarity and confidence.

Dr. Chamberlain shares that the book emerged from questions raised during a public debate at the opening of an atheist convention several years ago. The ideas explored during that event continued to resurface through subsequent academic presentations, classroom discussions, and conversations with students and colleagues.

“The case for atheism is being vigorously advanced today, but often in ways that differ from previous generations,” Dr. Chamberlain writes. As a result, many Christians encounter arguments and assumptions that can be difficult to identify, evaluate, or respond to effectively.

A central focus of the book is the way definitions and strategies within contemporary atheist discourse have evolved. Dr. Chamberlain explains that with atheism’s basic definition in flux, Christians wanting to engage in meaningful dialogue about God’s existence with atheist friends, neighbours, and colleagues can be left confused. The position today’s atheism places the unprepared debater in is one of defense. This book provides strategies to identify the subtle shifts and conversational maneuvers and to give thoughtful and thought-provoking answers from a knowledgeable and confident Christian perspective.

Rather than simply presenting abstract theories, The Changing World of Atheism uses practical examples and dialogue-based scenarios to illustrate how these conversations often unfold. The goal is to help readers recognize key ideas, think critically about competing claims, and participate in discussions with thoughtfulness and respect.

Scholarship with impact beyond the classroom

The project also builds on decades of scholarship and teaching. Throughout his career, Dr. Chamberlain has explored questions related to ethics, apologetics, philosophy, and leadership, helping students engage deeply with ideas that shape both personal belief and public life.

For Dr. Chamberlain, the book represents an opportunity to make complex philosophical discussions more accessible to a broader audience. By tracing contemporary developments in atheist thought and examining the arguments that accompany them, he seeks to provide readers with a practical framework for understanding one of the most significant worldview conversations of our time.
