Meet TWU’s 2026 spring valedictorian

Jenessa Butler reflects on her journey, her TWU community, and the call to what comes next.

Trinity Western University celebrates Jenessa Butler, the 2026 spring valedictorian, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in business administration. Known for her academic excellence, meaningful service, and thoughtful leadership, Jenessa’s time at TWU reflects the very heart of the University’s mission in action.

Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Jenessa chose TWU because she was seeking more than a strong academic program. Following in the footsteps of her two older sisters, who had both attended the University and spoke highly of their experiences, she was drawn to TWU’s Christ-centred approach, vibrant campus life, and commitment to whole-person growth. “I was looking for a school that could offer me more than just academics,” she shared. “Trinity was the perfect place for that.”

Committed to excellence & service

Throughout her undergraduate years, Jenessa distinguished herself academically, earning a place on the Dean’s List from her first semester and receiving multiple awards in chemistry. She also completed a competitive NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award, spending a summer studying the waxy chemical composition of plant species alongside faculty mentors.

Her contributions extended well beyond the classroom. Jenessa enjoyed serving as a student ambassador, welcoming prospective students and their families to campus. She volunteered with Surrey Urban Mission, an experience she cherishes, where she built relationships with individuals dealing with homelessness. She also gave her time weekly at Surrey Memorial Hospital, reflecting her growing interest in health care and service-oriented leadership.

A community that feels like home

For Jenessa, one of the most meaningful aspects of her TWU experience was the relationships she built along the way. From residence life to classrooms and campus activities, she found a community that grew to become family to her.

“My roommates, apartment-mates, and dormmates played a major role in shaping me into the person I am today,” she said. “The individuals I had the opportunity to live and study alongside became like a second family to me.”

Though she did not initially dive into campus life, Jenessa became increasingly involved in her later years. She now encourages current and incoming students to embrace opportunities early and fully engage in the life of the University.

“I didn’t really get involved in a lot of events and activities until my last few years,” she reflected. “Once I did, I realized how much I had been missing. Time flies, and you’ll look back wishing you had done more—so why not start right away?”

A steady faith journey

Jenessa’s time at TWU was marked by significant spiritual growth. While she grew up in the Church, she describes her relationship with Christ as becoming more personal and intentional during her University years. Through participation in discipleship groups and the support of her community, Jenessa deepened her faith and made the decision to be baptized in November of her final year.

This journey was reflected in her valedictory address, where she encouraged her fellow graduates to find purpose beyond personal plans and ambitions. She spoke about the challenge of trying to create a perfect future and the peace that comes from trusting in God’s direction instead.

“Real success, the kind that brings satisfaction, doesn’t come from having the perfect life,” she shared. “It comes from seeking his kingdom first.”

Looking ahead

In the weeks following convocation, Jenessa celebrated a major milestone in another way: she travelled abroad for the first time. Alongside her siblings, she spent two weeks exploring Italy, visiting Cinque Terre, Florence, and Rome. The trip marked both a long-awaited adventure and a meaningful time with family after years of study.

Now back at home, Jenessa is stepping into a gap year with intention. She plans to study for the MCAT, begin working in the fall, and continue discerning her path. While she is considering future studies in medicine, business, or a combination of both, she is approaching the decision with openness and trust.

Her story reflects the heart of the TWU experience: a journey shaped by academic rigour, authentic community, and discipleship. As the class of 2026 graduates, Jenessa’s voice stands as an invitation to embrace growth, trust God in the process, and step forward with confidence in what lies ahead.
