TWU Master of Arts in Leadership Mandarin Program alumni inspire and encourage one another during COVID-19

"This deep connection after graduation inspires us to wave the ribbon of friendship, to welcome and explore an unknown future together with unswerving commitment to living out transformational servant leadership in everything we do.”

—Jane Zhang, Program Manager for MA Leadership Mandarin

“One, two, three, here we come!”

On January 23, 2021, 25 alumni of the Master of Arts in Leadership Mandarin program who are engaged in the education field held a New Year party on Zoom. Alumni attendees joined in from Vancouver, Canada; South Carolina, U.S.A.; and Mainland Chines cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Xiamen, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Xuzhou and Qinhuangdao. Their professions ranged from business trainers, consultants, leadership coaches, mental health counsellors, camp leaders, business school administrators, childhood educators, actors and drama teachers.

Upholding the vision of “Belong, Grow and Serve“ of TWU Alumni, this group of alumni hope that they can exchange their rich professional experiences and serve each other, and to foster more collaboration in the China Alumni community through regular thematic meetings. This voluntary initiative is also an embodiment of the alumni’s commitment to the MA Leadership Mandarin program’s motto of “rooted in values and being servant leaders”.

During this two-hour virtual party, the participants introduced developments and challenges in each other’s businesses during COVID-19. During this exchange, participants found areas where further connection and collaboration would be possible. One alum proposed the idea of establishing “a Home School Research Institute,” one offered to provide workshops on “using drama to improve expressiveness,” and one offered to share experiences in business consultancy. All of the open exchanges made us feel the abundance, openness and joy that characterize our alumni community.

“This get-together marks a new beginning for us,” said Jane Zhang, Program Manager for MA Leadership Mandarin. “We will continue our monthly meeting with alumni voluntarily taking turns to chair the meetings. This deep connection after graduation inspires us to wave the ribbon of friendship, to welcome and explore an unknown future together with unswerving commitment to living out transformational servant leadership in everything we do.”
