Courses in Mandarin Chinese are offered at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced level, including a film and culture course for native speakers of Mandarin. The introductory courses are designed for students with no previous knowledge of either Mandarin or Cantonese. The emphasis is on listening comprehension and conversational practice, while reading and writing skills are also introduced. The high intermediate and advanced courses are offered as Directed Studies, which students may take with permission. All levels include cultural components.
Japanese courses are offered at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced level. Introductory Japanese is for students with no previous knowledge of the language. Second year courses and higher are offered as Directed Students, which students may take with permission. Both oral and written skills are developed in these courses, including the use of Japanese characters on the keyboard. All levels include cultural components.
Introductory and intermediate courses are offered in German. Students gain oral and written skills in the language while being introduced to German culture. Literature is included in the second year courses, usually offered as Directed Studies.
Russian courses are offered at the introductory level, while intermediate courses may be taken by Directed Study with the instructor. As with the other languages, the focus is on both written and oral skills, as well as culture.
