Admission Requirements

Become an education assistant and make an impact in the classroom.

General Requirements

Applicants to the Educational Assistant Certificate must meet the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of high school
  • English language proficiency demonstrated by:
    • English 12 with a minimum grade of C+ or
    • IELTS with a score of 7.0 in speaking and 6.5 in all other bands
  • Evidence of suitability to work with children or youth

Pre‑Admission Requirements

Upon admission and before beginning the certificate, all students must:

  • Successfully complete a First Aid course, including CPR training
  • Pass a criminal record check

Additional Requirements by Delivery Method

Applicants to the in‑person certificate on our Langley campus must also meet the following requirements:

  • Evidence of experience working with children or teens, preferably in a school setting
  • Two letters of reference supporting relevant experience
IN-PERSON CERTIFICATE OVERVIEW:
  • Delivery method: In person at the Langley campus
  • Start date: September
  • Applications accepted up until classes begin, subject to space availability
  • Anticipated length: One year, full time
International applicants:

At this time, a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is not available for this certificate.

Applicants to the online certificate must meet all general requirements, plus the following:

  • A minimum of one year of experience working in an education assistant role
  • Proof of current employment as an education assistant in a Canadian K–12 school
  • Confirmation that a school support team representative (e.g., principal, inclusive education coordinator, or certified teacher) can provide required supervision
  • Completion of the Education Assistant Practicum Site Agreement Form during the application stage
Technical requirements:
  • Access to a computer and reliable internet
  • Basic computer and internet literacy
ONLINE CERTIFICATE OVERVIEW:
  • Delivery method: Fully online (combination of synchronous and asynchronous classes)
  • Practicum courses are completed at the student’s place of current employment
  • Start date: September
  • Applications accepted up until classes begin, subject to space availability
  • Anticipated length: One year, full time; two years or more, part time (maximum five years)
