Robert J. V. Hiebert, PhD

Adjunct Professor of Old Testament
My educational philosophy is based on the concept of wisdom, the Hebrew word for which connotes skill. Biblical wisdom involves the skill of living in conformity with the Creator’s design, a relational undertaking marked by love for God and neighbour, and that also entails the development of competencies that are necessary for learning.

Dr. Rob Hiebert is a native of British Columbia who was born in Vancouver and grew up in the beautiful Fraser Valley. Following high school and undergraduate studies in Bible school and junior college, he pursued his academic interests, first in Israel and then in Toronto, where, after completing his PhD, he taught for eleven years at Ontario Bible College and Theological Seminary (now Tyndale University and Tyndale Seminary). In 1998, he accepted an invitation to become Associate Professor of Old Testament at Trinity Western Seminary, an affiliate of the Associated Canadian Theological Schools (ACTS). He was awarded tenure and promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2003. He has served in a number of administrative capacities at Trinity Western, including as the inaugural Director of the John William Wevers Institute for Septuagint Studies (2005-23). After retiring from his full-time academic position in 2021, he transitioned to the position of Adjunct Professor of Old Testament—lecturing, teaching, serving on thesis committees and as a thesis supervisor. He continues to participate in scholarly conferences, pursue his research interests, and fulfill his publication commitments. He also enjoys reading in a diverse range of subject areas, walking, jogging, hiking, travelling, playing basketball, and fishing. He is married to Karen, a retired high school teacher who periodically accepts teacher-on-call assignments. Rob and Karen are parents of two daughters, parents-in-law of their daughters’ husbands, and grandparents of a sweet granddaughter. They also serve as life group leaders in their local church.
