TWU's Dr. Yu-Ling Lee Speaks on the Technologization of Education and Faith

Name

How is technology shaping society, particularly during this time of increased online learning and virtual socialization during the COVID-19 pandemic? Building upon his previous research into the complex relationship between Christian living, online technology, and the education and formation of the current generation of youth and young adults, Dr. Yu-Ling Lee spoke on the "Technologization of education and faith" in a recent lecture, part of the TWU's Lunch and Learn series led by TWU professors Dr. Herbert Tsang and Dr. Karen Lo

Dr. Lee is Assistant Professor of Education at TWU' School of EducationDuring his doctoral studies, Dr. Lee was part of UBC's How We Learn Lab. His research was in the intersection of technology and theology, or, what Dr. Lee calls "techno-theology." He studied how people were creating technology, by looking at groups who identify as "makers" and "hackers." Through participating in and hosting makers' fairs and hackathon events, Dr. Lee studied people in the process of creating educational technologies.

Dr. Lee wanted to learn, "How are these people understanding technology for educational purposes?" He was also particularly interested in makers and hackers with religious and with Christian views. He found app builders who built apps that could facilitate prayer ministries, for example. "These were examples of how people were wrestling with how technology and theology come together," he said.

Expanding on his interests in curriculum and theology, Dr. Lee continues to explore ways in which make-a-thons and hackathons can be integrated into education. Previously, he hosted a hackathon for girls, providing an early experience into hands-on technological creation.
