How to Find Off-Campus Housing
Start early. Begin your search as soon as possible, especially for high-demand periods like September and January. The earlier you start, the more options you’ll have, and you’ll avoid last-minute stress.
Use multiple platforms. Explore a variety of sources, including TWU’s official Off-Campus Housing site (OCH101), Sabbatical Homes, University Living, uHomes, Harmony Homestay, and local rental websites. Each platform offers different types of listings, from apartments and shared houses to homestays and faculty-hosted homes.
Screen listings carefully. Always meet landlords in person or virtually, tour the property, and ask for references from previous tenants. This helps you avoid scams and ensures the accommodation meets your needs.
Understand your rights. Familiarize yourself with BC tenancy laws to know your rights and responsibilities as a renter. The official government resource is available at BC Residential Tenancies.
Budget wisely. Calculate your total monthly costs, including rent, utilities (electricity, gas, water—these may not be included in base rent), internet, renter’s insurance, and transportation. Make sure your budget covers all essentials and leaves room for unexpected expenses.
Communicate with roommates. If you plan to share housing, discuss and agree on house rules, cleaning schedules, bill payments, and responsibilities up front. Clear communication helps prevent conflicts.
