Trinity Western University’s Equipping Lectures series is taking learners on a journey to better understand the factors that are becoming essential in today’s globally connected world.
This series of lectures, given by faculty from the School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC), explores timely topics. For example: Do we still matter in the age of A.I.? How are we interconnected to our natural environment? In a digital world, how can we learn to pay attention to ourselves and those around us?
New lectures upcoming
SAMC will be introducing one new lecture per month during the "Last Thursday: Donuts + Dialogue" encounters, which take place on the last Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in RNT 128 at Trinity Western University's Langley campus.

Rethinking education
Dean of SAMC Dr. Scott Macklin believes that traditional institutions of higher education must rethink their approaches to better equip tomorrow’s professionals with the skills, competencies, and conceptual understandings that they will need to navigate throughout their careers.
"My hope," he expresses, "is that as you engage in this signature series of lectures by our faculty, you'll see that the School of the Arts, Media + Culture is a place for faith-fueled creativity to flourish, where we are called to create responsibly and redemptively, opening ourselves up to the reality and presence of grace beyond ourselves."
He continues, “Through this series we lean into answering the question, 'How do we give pause and ponder acts of joy and wonder through our Imago Dei reality, in order to live faithfully where we are called to be salt and light to the world, through our creative acts, connecting our passions with the world’s great needs?'”

The Equipping Lectures series includes:
- Scott Macklin – Creativity and Participation: Being Joygantic
Professor Scott Macklin asks the listener to pause in their life and learning to open themselves up to moments of joy and discusses how SAMC encourages faith-fueled creativity and flourishing.
- Kevin Schut – Do You Still Matter in the Age of A.I.
Professor Kevin Schut discusses the changing landscape of game design since the advent of artificial intelligence and asks how we can balance worry and enthusiasm for this new technology.
- Divine Agodzo – How to Develop Cultural Intelligence
Professor Divine Agodzo shows the listener that cultural intelligence is essential in today’s world and teaches them how to wield that skill to better understand individual differences across cultures and contexts.
- Joshua Hale – Creativity and Cultivating Interconnection
Professor Joshua Hale focuses on connection, advising the listener to learn from complex interconnections in the natural world and to use those lessons to enhance their own lives, relationships, and community.
- Erica Grimm – Paying Attention and the Cost of Inattention
Professor Erica Grimm seeks to change the listener’s perspective, emphasizing that “paying attention” is a verb, requiring action, and practicing that skill will unlock a better understanding of both one’s internal and external reality.
