COURSE DESIGN

The courses are designed for students to engage with the course content both online and through participation in learning labs. Instructor-created online materials guide students through this educational experience. Students are also required to attend learning labs led by a course facilitator. The purpose of the facilitation learning lab is to allow students to engage with the process of learning, to demonstrate their mastery of the content, and to receive live support and feedback from their peers, facilitator, and occasionally from the instructor.

Online courses require learners to be well-organized and self-motivated, and we have included support for students to help them develop strong learning habits that will ensure their success. For example, there are several learning activities throughout the course that are designed to help students to succeed on the course assignments, upon which student final grade will be determined. The course assignments are an opportunity to demonstrate to the instructor students’ understanding of the course learning outcomes. As students complete the activities and assessment, we encourage them to practice evaluative judgement or the ability to judge for themselves the quality of their work.

Note that these are full university-level courses with an expected workload similar to an in-person course (e.g., a six-week, 3 semester-hour course likely requires 20–30 hours of study per week). This includes viewing the online materials, completing learning activities, attending learning labs, and completing assignments.
