President Mark Husbands, Ph.D.

As Trinity Western University’s fifth president and vice chancellor, Mark Husbands is wholeheartedly committed to advancing the mission of a university where people love Christ, love the gospel, and—through Christ-like service—seek to use their gifts to transform the world.

Dr. Husbands came to Trinity Western University in 2019 with an established record of successful academic and institutional leadership, scholarship, and significant experience as a Reformed theologian. Motivated to help students connect their faith and learning to the deepest needs and challenges of the world, Dr. Husbands has enriched the lives of many students throughout his over 25 years of teaching and academic leadership.

As President, Dr. Husbands is leading Trinity Western University to advance the development of Christian higher education throughout the globe. Trinity Western attracts students from over 70 countries around the world. Approximately 50% of Trinity Western University students studying domestically, come from outside of Canada. With four campuses in Langley, Richmond (Minoru and Lansdowne), and Ottawa, joint Great Wall MBA programs in Tianjin, Shanghai, and Beijing (partnering with Tianjin University of Finance and Economics), and FAR Centres in Stella Maris College in Chennai (India), at Jagannath University in Jaipur (India), Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara (Uganda), and most recently, Meadow Hall University in Lekki (Nigeria), Trinity Western University is providing a transformative education to emerging and current leaders throughout the world.

This Spring, thanks to the generous and faithful support of donors and friends of the University, Trinity Western will open (debt-free) a beautiful $35 million Robert G. Kuhn Centre. This four-storey mass timber building will mark the entry to the university’s Langley, B.C. campus and will serve as a multi-functional facility for students and faculty. It is the new home of the School of Business, GLOBAL, and Student Life’s Global Engagement Office (GEO).

Under Dr. Husband’s leadership, Trinity Western University has completely eliminated all bank debt while adding $14.7 million to its endowment. Seeking to highlight the unique value proposition of Trinity Western, the University has launched several innovative student-focused initiatives. These initiatives—aimed at addressing the “job to be done” for students—include a “Connected Campus” approach to delivering integrated student services, and a Centre for Calling and Career Development designed to equip students to launch well into their professional lives by first inviting them into a focused process of personal, professional, and faith development. Furthermore, Trinity Western University has won a prestigious international award to advance research engaging science, religion, and societal issues, and to enhance diversity among STEM faculty. TWU has launched a new Executive MBA program in 2021, and will launch its first doctoral program (in Nursing) summer of 2022. At the same time, Trinity Western University has navigated a global pandemic with a positive cash flow and EBIDTA.

A graduate of York University in Toronto, Husbands earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies with a minor in music. At the University of Toronto, he completed a master’s degree writing a thesis on the language philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein and Martin Heidegger, and launched the academic journal Prolegomena. Husbands obtained his doctorate in Christian theology from the University of St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto (Toronto School of Theology). While working under the supervision of one of the world’s leading Christian theologians, the late John Webster, he completed a dissertation on Karl Barth’s ethics of prayer. Committed to integrating faith and reason, Husbands has published six edited volumes demonstrating the intellectual, ecclesial, and moral significance of the theology of Karl Barth, world Christianity, political and moral theology.

Mark Husbands officially began his tenure at Trinity Western University on July 1, 2019. As President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Husbands believes that Trinity Western offers students an unparalleled opportunity to connect knowledge, skills, faith, and purpose; in short, to face the world fearlessly, faithfully, and with joyful confidence in the light and truth of the Gospel.
