Enrique Torres, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Mathematical Sciences
I enjoy teaching and working with my students following a Christian perspective that emphasizes justice, mercy, and humility. I regard my job at Trinity as a privilege and opportunity to grow alongside with my students both academically and spiritually.

Dr. Torres completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of British Columbia. He wrote his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Alejandro Adem. His research focuses on applications and connections of Algebraic Topology to other areas such as Robotics and Group Theory. Dr. Torres arrived at TWU in 2018 after spending time working at institutions such as the University of Michigan (postdoc), the University of Rochester (postdoc), and the Universidad de Guanajuato (professor)., He has supervised several research projects involving undergraduate students that have led to the publication of research papers. He is currently working on the Motion Planning Problem – more specifically, he is working on the calculation of the Topological Complexity of certain spaces that quantifies the difficulty of constructing stable motion instructions for autonomous robots.

Ph.D. in Mathematics, University of British Columnbia, 2008

Expertise

Dr. Torres is currently working on Topological Complexity. He is interested in studying how to incorporate group actions to the study of the motion planning problem when these are regarded as external mechanical systems assisting the motion.

Keywords: Algebraic Topology, Finite Groups, Topological Complexity, Spaces of Homomorphisms.
