Black Prophetic Rhetoric from the Civil Rights Movement to Hip-Hop with Speaker Dr. Theon Hill
Whether it’s challenging students in his Hip-Hop Culture course to consider rap music as a soundtrack to the social justice movement or his publications examining civil rights metaphors in President Obama’s speeches, Dr. Hill is passionate about exploring the relationship between rhetoric and social change, especially as it relates to race, culture and the Christian faith.
Join Dr. Hill as he examines Black civic engagement through the Biblical lens of “prophetic” communication—the act of speaking uncomfortable truths to promote social justice.
Tracing an eclectic historical line from Martin Luther King to Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Hill will address how prophetic voices from the Church to the street corner have animated and inspired the ongoing quest for civil and human rights throughout the world. Mark your calendar for this timely, thought-provoking discussion about passionate words that still speak truth and demand change.
The lecture will be followed by a moderated conversation with a group of Trinity Western University students and an open Q&A session.
