Taking a global perspective: How Lucy Chuang's research on religious discrimination connects her to different cultures outside the classroom

11 winners of Trinity Western undergraduate research awards are pursuing various fields of research this summer. International Studies major Lucy Chuang investigates the global persecution of Christians and the future of churches in restricted nations.

This summer, TWU researcher Lucy Chuang is scanning the globe for patterns of religious persecution among Christian minority groups.

As one of 11 winners of the 2021 TWU USRA awards, Chuang is conducting summer research under the supervision of Dr. Paul Rowe.

Chuang is a fourth-year student at TWU pursuing a major in International Studies with a minor in Computing Science. She hopes to work in the field cybersecurity in the future.

Chuang explains that her research focuses on the discrimination against Christians in countries around the world. "I've been studying different cultures, historical backgrounds, and the current situation for local Christian communities," she said. "My work includes summarizing the countries' profiles and reporting current events in the nations."

Chuang says that she enjoys this work because it allows her to learn more about different cultures outside of the classroom. She will produce an academic paper on one country's persecution of Christians and the future of churches in that nation.

She is also assisting with the launch of a research institute branch location at TWU, the International Institute For Religious Freedom Vancouver (IIRF-V). Part of her work this summer is to build their official website.

This Fall, Chuang ventures off to TWU's Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa, where she will spend a semester at the nation's capital taking courses and doing internship work.
